So a long time ago, which was approximately about last week where bad luck arrived in three, I came across this fantastic error message you see over there.
It popped up right after the NVIDIA setup failed to install the drivers on several different high-end systems that I was working on for no apparent reason. So, like a true leader of the Dothraki and as a Skyrim survivor –I relaxed, took three deep breaths, stretched my fingers and hamstrings followed by a proper posture squat, I then fired up setup.exe again.
I immediately got same log that read “NVIDIA Installer failed” again –and none of the NVIDIA driver components were installed to replace the basic Window driver. See, that totally sucks because if I ever wanted a random generic video card, I’d just use the integrated GPU and call it a great life; rather than burning through a few $400’s for these GTX’s. In a sudden flashback, I was pretty sure that this is karma serving justice at me for not letting that guy merge into my lane on i-95 last week.
However, I quickly recomposed myself. The troubleshooting took places along with many of hours of frustration –where it should have been remedied by NVIDIA or Microsoft themselves in the first place. Several searches from Google and Bing return similar problem everywhere. It does not matter if it’s a GTX 460, GTX 570 or the new GTX 950, GTX 1080, etc.. the damn installer just won’t install. At this point, I think it’s possessed. On the other hand, Windows being a difficult teenager, wouldn’t even bother to give a second try at the very certified driver that it has just directly obtained from the Windows Update itself. Such a phase.
Fortunately, my CPG team got the best and most qualified tech staffs in the world and together we were able to troubleshoot this problem in no time (2 years). Since you’re first time here, I’ll show you a sneak peek of how our early interview process looked like before we were hired:
Essential Things To Check
First thing first, be sure Windows is running on the latest Service Pack. Windows 7? Get SP1. Windows 8? Get 8.1. Windows 10? ..Crap.. well, check anyway because this should not happen on Windows 10. But I’m not surprised if it does.We all know that this is a complicated relationship between NVIDIA and Microsoft and all but unfortunately you and I are caught up in the crossfire –which should have been a problem of AMD since they came up with the term Crossfire in the first place. But well, NVIDIA holds the honor. Anyway, these are the few forms of the error:
- Error Code 28
- Driver cannot be installed
- No Hardware Specified
- System keeps rolling back to Standard VGA Adapter driver after restart, etc…
- Make sure on-board graphics chipset is deactivated and BIOS is set to use current discrete video card as main.
- Make sure your motherboard BIOS is running the latest firmware.
- Hard Drive is not too full. There were many cases when NIVIDA setup could not extract the packet into the Temp folder because the target drive was packed.
- Antivirus program or Firewall should not give any issue but it’s worth some attention. Disable it just in case. Don’t forget to enable it the next time you browse
brazzerthe Internet. - Try your video card on a different PCIe slot or different computer to see whether the same issue occurs. You may find a way to rule out the possibility that the motherboard or the video card is defective.
- Run a quick file system check using the command sfc /scannow to make sure the Windows core has not been altered or violated.
Method I : Manually Update Driver Through Device Manager
This is the most simple fix. Sometimes it works like a charm, other times it’s a miss. Like the first date. Or first bathroom after the tacos.
- Right click and use Update Driver Software on the Display or Standard VGA Graphics Adapter from your device list.
- Point to the path of the extracted NVIDIA driver folder (eg. C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\xxx.xx\windows_version\English\Display.Driver). If this folder does not exist, you have never run the installer before.
Restart PC as soon as it’s done.
Proceed to run the NVIDIA installer once again as usual if the video card has been successfully recognized. In case nothing happens or the system still identifies the video card as a generic device, you have to move on to the next step.
Method II (Follow each step carefully)
A. The complete removal of all NVIDIA driver files from the System
- Install Driver Sweeper.
- Apply Take Ownership to Registry (this registry hack is pretty useful for other situations, too; such as when you cannot delete a file or do not have access to old porn folder due to permission issue).
Restart PC and get in Safe Mode (press F8 after initial POST).
Delete these following NVIDIA Driver data supplied from Windows Update if existed (right click on the folders and choose Take Ownership if the system does not allow you to remove them) :
- C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\nvdsp.inf–xxxsomethingxxx
- C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\nv_lh–xxxsomethingxxx
- C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\nvoclock–xxxsomethingxxx
- C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\
- C:\Program Files (x86)\NVIDIA Corporation\
Now also fire up Driver Sweeper and delete everything else that is related to NVIDIA. Restart the PC after the process is completed.
B. Perform a Clean Installation under Super User Role
- Download and extract PStools.
- Move the PsExec.exe file into your C:\Windows\System32\ folder.
- Press Windows key + R and type the following command into the message box. Be sure to replace the path accordingly to your own reference:
- After the License Agreement screen, choose Custom instead of Express installation.
- Now you can check Perform a Clean Installation and uncheck NVIDIA Update.
Continue on until the setup process completes. Restart the PC and you should have your video card working properly upon the next load.

If nothing works, perhaps you could still try Method III.
Method III (do at your own risk)
Step 1: Clean up workspace.
Step 2: Go Luke Cage.
Step 3: Arrive at the dark side.

Method number two worked for me like a charm, thanks!
For whoever wants to know, there was only one Nvidia entry that I deleted in Safe Mode, but that appears to have been sufficient.
It’s a relief to see that there’s an easy fix for this weird problem – I’ve been experiencing this with my last two laptops and since February this year I’ve been running with the same driver rather than updating it, which always resulted in knocking out the graphics card and giving me a Code 28 error. To get the last driver to run I had to go into the .inf files and edited them with the correct values from the Hardware ID in device manager.
Anyway, thanks very much for this.
W7 x64. Geforce experience was failing, pure downloaded installer was failing (custom installation -> driver only, either with clean install or not).
Windows driver update somehow was installing, but reverted to Standard VGA adapter after reboot.
I’ve rebooted to safemode. Nvidia installer doesnt work there. Windows update worked (Update driver for VGA adapter -> Browse my computer for files -> Display.Driver folder inside the extracted Nvidia installer files. Maybe automated would work too).
After reboot, driver was up, but no control panel. Magically, nvidia installer works now (and shows no version of driver installed?)
Next time there will be driver update, screw it.
Another method: Download “CCleaner”. Fix all registry issues. Done
Method 3 works like a charm. Thanks :D
Sadly nvidia wont let me update the drivers in safe mode since it keeps saying “cannot install C++ redis in safe mode” even though I’ve installed the redis theyved provided in their folder (2013 x64 and x84)
Thank you so much
The second option worked for me. Windows 10 Pro x64
Thank fuggin God! Method II works wonders. Thank you so much!
confused at this part any help?
“Press Windows key + R and type the following command into the message box. Be sure to replace the path accordingly to your own reference :”
At this point i have no drivers installed how can i search my C drive for a folder that don’t exist?
You are a life saver!
I fudgein love you bro i was having a mental break down, but you showed me the glorious light.
Uninstall Comodo antivirus did it in my case, I thought the whole time that the video card could be broken.
Thanks for the help, also your jokes about karma and marriage were hilarious XD
Just download MS Net Framework 4.0 and install before running the Asus setup disk. Worked on my Strix 970
Thanks fot Method III… it helped me very much
Dissable Comodo Antivirus and Firewall and end kill all its processes in task manager
Thank you
For those struggling with the step of psexec.exe! I dont know if required but i got it working this way: I actually executed the exe after i put it inside system32 folder. There was a prompt to accept terms and i pressed accept. The program should close automatically. Afterwards i input the command manually, apparently this ” sign doesnt work when copied or something! Also, the setup.exe is nowadays not located at \display.driver folder anymore, just delete that part out there and the path is correct.
Thanks for making this guide, the second step worked for me, after a year of struggling with this error i can finally be happy again!
uninstalling geforce experience with revo uninstaller using advanced did the job for me. Quickest way by far.
Thanks–Method II Part A did the trick. After that, Nvidia’s installer succeeded. (Didn’t need to try Part B.)
Method I worked for me, thanks a lot! : )
My solution:
1 – I downloaded the necessary driver zip directly from NVIDIA’s official website.
2 – Unzipped, launched BUT (big BUT) instead of selecting the Express/Recommended install, I instead opted selected custom.
3 – A checkbox at the end of the custom installation form can be checked to run a CLEAN INSTALL. This will remove your previous NVIDIA driver profiles and components.
4 – I received a confirmation message that the driver installed, rebooted and my display was functioning as desired.
Note: I DIDN’T combine this with any other measures. E.g. Disabling Comodo etc.
Thanks for sharing this tip with us!
Thank you SO MUCH !!! NVIDIA support didn’t helped me at all, giving me twice the 1st advice. Second method is pretty hard to guess, and it’s so helpfull. You saved my gaming computer thanks !
Thankyou very much, can’t believe you have to go through these steps to simply install the latest driver but I’m very thankful someone has solved the issue!
Method 2 worked for me, only needed to do part 1, couldn’t get pstools to work so simply ran the exe file after using drive sweeper and thankfully it worked fine (Installing driver for GTX 970 for Windows 10 64 bit).
METHOD 1 WORK MAN I LOVE YOU
Thank you very much… after two low-speed months of living with VGA Compatible Driver on my GT610, your method 1 has helped me install GT610 from CDROM successfully. You are God-sent!
Thanks dood!! just ran Driver Sweeper you linked (didnt update it as i tryed latest ver earlier and it had some bs netframework error even tho i had all that up to date…) then stupid Nivdia driver would FINALLY install!
Only prob is i cant move or delete the Nivdia driver installer from my desktop as it says its still in use by explorer?? even after restart, oh well i can live with that
OMG! method 2 works! Thank you very much~
lol struggling cant find that take ownership thing.
Thanks! Method 2 helped. I didn’t use Pstools though; I just installed it normally after using Driver Sweeper.
Thank you so much, for a total computer noob, this helped greatly!! If there’s a commend button i would click it! (Y)
wooow!!! method 2 finaly worked!!!!!
For those of us who are not so tech savvy. There is an amazing program called display driver uninstaller (ddu) that does all the file uninstalling for you in method 2 and even sets the computer to safe mode for you. All you have to do after that is click costume install and clean install.
COMODO! DISABLE COMODO! NOW!
Oh thank you! It did it! But i had to try methot 2 more then once. When i did everything for the first time it didn’t worked. I just got that damn “installer failed” message again. But at the same time my Viber crashed for some reason. So i’ve decidet to disable it in the autorun menu as well as Skype, just in case. Then i’ve repeated method 2 again and it worked out! Thanks!
P.S. i know my English is not so good, sorry for that :)
Thank you so much! This article saved me from completely re-installing Windows 7. And I didn’t even have to resort to Method 2 because Method 1 worked just fine after completely closing Comodo and stopping Panda Antivirus.
Method 2 helped me!! Thanks alot!
Wow, this had been bugging me for months and finally became critical the past week when my Nvidia card kept crashing on windows 10 and needed a real windows 10 official update. I could not install, kept failing. I shut off comodo and presto!… full install of the drivers. Huge thanks.
it did it…….thanx a million
Well, closing COMODO didn’t help. lol
If only it was that simple… But for me, of course it’s not…
OMG FING COMODO!!!!!!!!!!! COMODO COMODO COMODO COMODO!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you guys!!!! It was 200% helpful. I have used method 2 and it worked perdectly. Great job!
YACI – Yet Another Comodo Issue. Exiting and the install worked fine. @#$@%!
Another vote and thanks for the commenters that mentioned Comodo. Exit the program and install worked.
I booted into safe mode. Driver installed fine then. Restarted and everything’s good.
Freakin Comodo!…..Bought a refurb GTX 970 card on New Egg for a great price and I was about to put it back in the package for a RMA….thanks for the info guys!
COMODO !!!
CLOSE IT. This eventually helped me, I wasted hours trying to find out why this … wonderful driver doesn’t want to cooperate.
Closed COMODO = Successful installation.
Prepare the champagne, you will rejoice as I had if you invested as much time as I did to solve it.
I’ve been tearing my hair out for the last 4 hours trying to update this driver! Searched google and went through all the diagnostic steps, and even all the steps above but to no avail. Then I saw the comments about COMODO below. THANK YOU!! All installed perfectly after exiting COMODO.
SO to reiterate what is said below…..
COMPLETELY CLOSE COMODO!!! Just remember to turn it back on when you are finished!
Thank you all below for your help :)
In case it hasn’t been stated enough….
COMODO COMODO COMODO COMODO COMODO COMODO COMODO COMODO COMODO COMODO COMODO COMODO COMODO COMODO COMODO COMODO COMODO COMODO COMODO COMODO COMODO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SHUT OFF YOUR F*****ING COMODO! LOL
SERIOUSLY. GAMING MODE OR WHATEVER ISN’T ENOUGH.
CLOSE IT!
Had to add the installer as an exception in Symantec Endpoint Protection which fixed the problem. Thanks!
My Dr.Web blocked it :(
It was the Comodo, best security I have ever used, but it has its moments.
I will just repeat what others said here, it was that cursed commodo, need to close it completely, not just disable firewall. Thank god i searched here.
COMODO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you so much! I don’t know much about computers and you really helped and explained things in a clear way.
Thanks a ton!! Worked like a charm except the last step with PsExec. Couldn’t get it to run at all except as a tiny DOS window that instantly disappeared no matter what modifiers I used. But once I had disabled all firewalls and such the normal install package worked.
just like to say I’ve been attempting for over 6 months to update my driver ,not sure if the take ownership helped for it still wouldn’t install after, but after going into device manager—>display—>update driver—>browse computer for driver software —>browse and then pointing it to where I had it downloaded on my computer it installed. now to see if I continue to get display crashes, we shall see and thnx :-}
Thank you!!!!!!
You saved me! Thanks.
Worked, thanks a heap.
Thank you for the comodo comment, I closed it and it worked like a charm, thank you so much for the info!!!
